    Writing Samples
Please upload your ANONYMIZED and UNPUBLISHED writing sample in a single document. We prefer PDF documents, but also accept .doc, .docx, and .rtf files.

Please do not include your name, mailing address, email, or any other identifying information in the document or the document title. Only submit work that has not been edited by or published in a magazine. If your work has been accepted but has not yet been edited and will not be published before April 2026, that is acceptable.

Format: Please follow proper manuscript format (modern manuscript format is fine!). Please use a 12-point font. We prefer Courier or Courier New, but will accept Times fonts. Your manuscript should be double-spaced, with one-inch margins. Set your margins flush left and do not justify the text. Please title your document by the name of the sample and the year. Example: StopKillingMe2026.

You have three choices of what you may submit*:
    a) 1-2 short stories totaling no more than 10,000 words

    b) one longer story of up to 10,000 words

    c) a novel excerpt of up to 10,000 words with a synopsis of up to three pages (the synopsis counts toward the 10,000-word limit)

*There is no need to max out the word count. Send us the work you feel best represents your current abilities and goals as a writer.

Please note that if you are accepted to the workshop, your writing sample will be shared with the summer instructors. It may also be used to determine scholarship awards.
